Alipay for Foreigners in China: How to Set Up and Pay

Set up Alipay with an overseas number and eligible foreign bank card, then learn how to pay and handle common issues in China.

Ask Buddy
IN THIS GUIDE

Can foreigners use Alipay in China? Yes. International visitors can register with an overseas phone number and link eligible foreign bank cards, including Visa and Mastercard, without opening a Chinese bank account.

Alipay is especially useful in China, where QR-code payments are common at restaurants, convenience stores, attractions, and many other businesses.

The important part is setting it up before you arrive, rather than discovering a verification problem when you're trying to pay for your first meal.

Here's how to get started, which cards may work, and what to do if a payment fails.

Can Foreigners Use Alipay Without a Chinese Bank Account?

Ask Buddy ↗

Yes. Alipay supports eligible international bank cards for everyday purchases in mainland China.

You generally need:

  • A smartphone with the official Alipay app.
  • A working phone number, including a supported overseas number.
  • An eligible international bank card.
  • Your passport for identity verification when required.
  • Internet access to complete payments.

You don't normally need a Chinese SIM card or a mainland Chinese bank account.

However, not every Alipay feature is available to international cardholders. Some transfers, personal QR-code payments, and other financial services may have additional restrictions.

How to Set Up Alipay Before Traveling to China

Ask Buddy ↗

Setting up Alipay is relatively straightforward, but completing it several days before departure gives you time to resolve any verification issues.

Step 1: Download the Official Alipay App

Ask Buddy ↗

Find Alipay in the Apple App Store or Google Play, or use the download link on the official Alipay website.

Make sure you're installing the main Alipay app rather than a different regional wallet.

Step 2: Register with Your Phone Number

Ask Buddy ↗

Open Alipay and follow the registration instructions.

Select your country code, enter your phone number, and complete SMS verification if prompted.

An international phone number can be used for registration. Make sure you can still receive verification messages while traveling.

Step 3: Complete Identity Verification

Ask Buddy ↗

Alipay may ask you to verify your identity before enabling certain payment functions.

Depending on your account, this can involve entering passport information, uploading an identity document, or completing additional security checks.

Follow the instructions shown in your app. Requirements can vary by account and may change over time.

Ask Buddy ↗

Once registered:

  1. Open Alipay and tap Me.
  2. Select Bank Cards.
  3. Choose the option to add a card.
  4. Enter your card information.
  5. Complete any verification requested by Alipay or your bank.

Your bank may need to authorize the connection. If the card is declined, contact the issuer before trying repeatedly.

Tip: Adding a card successfully doesn't guarantee every future payment will work. Keep another payment method ready.

Which International Cards Work with Alipay?

Ask Buddy ↗

Alipay supports several international card networks, although eligibility depends on the issuing bank, card type, and current service rules.

Card NetworkWhat Travelers Should Know
VisaSupported for eligible overseas cards
MastercardSupported for eligible overseas cards
DiscoverSupported for eligible overseas cards
Diners ClubSupported for eligible overseas cards
JCBSupported for eligible overseas cards
American ExpressSupported for eligible overseas cards
UnionPaySupported in applicable payment arrangements

A card carrying a supported network logo can still be rejected by its issuing bank.

If your card won't link, try another eligible card or contact your bank to check international transaction authorization.

How to Pay with Alipay in China

Ask Buddy ↗

There are two common ways to make an Alipay payment.

The setup walkthrough also covers in-store payments from 2:33. The two payment methods are explained below.

Option 1: Scan the Merchant's QR Code

Ask Buddy ↗

This is common at smaller shops and restaurants.

  1. Open Alipay and select Scan.
  2. Scan the merchant's payment QR code.
  3. Enter the amount if requested.
  4. Check the merchant and amount.
  5. Confirm the payment.

Option 2: Show Your Payment Code

Ask Buddy ↗

This is common at supermarkets, convenience stores, and staffed checkouts.

  1. Open Alipay.
  2. Select Pay/Receive or the payment-code function.
  3. Show your payment code to the cashier.
  4. Wait for the payment confirmation.

Important: A QR code for a personal transfer may not support payments funded by an international card. If your payment fails, ask whether the merchant has a business payment QR code or another checkout method.

Two Alipay merchant payment methods: the traveler scans the merchant's code, or the cashier scans the traveler's payment code.

Alipay Fees and Payment Limits for Foreigners

Ask Buddy ↗

Before using Alipay, check whether additional fees apply to your linked international card.

Shanghai's official visitor guidance, updated in September 2026, describes the following standard arrangement for eligible international-card QR payments:

Transaction AmountPublished Service Fee
RMB 200 or lessNo additional platform service fee
More than RMB 200Generally 3% of the full transaction amount, unless an applicable waiver applies

That guidance also described limits of US$5,000 per transaction and US$50,000 annually for overseas visitors using linked international cards.

These are published reference figures, not a guarantee of your current account's fees or limits. Card-network arrangements, account verification, payment products, and provider policies may differ.

Your issuing bank may also charge foreign transaction or currency conversion fees.

Always check the fee displayed before confirming payment. For an expensive hotel stay or large purchase, compare the total cost with other available payment methods.

What If Alipay Doesn't Work?

Ask Buddy ↗

Most payment problems fall into a few categories.

ProblemWhat to Do
Card won't linkCheck card eligibility and contact your issuing bank
Verification code doesn't arriveCheck SMS access, roaming, and registered number
Payment is declinedCheck your balance, card restrictions, and in-app messages
QR code doesn't support your cardAsk for a merchant payment code or another method
App can't connectCheck mobile data or Wi-Fi
Account requires verificationFollow Alipay's official security instructions

Avoid repeatedly submitting failed payments without checking whether a transaction has already been charged.

Never share your payment password, verification codes, or account recovery information with strangers offering to help.

Should You Also Set Up WeChat Pay?

Ask Buddy ↗

Having a second mobile payment option is useful, especially when traveling independently.

Both Alipay and WeChat Pay support eligible international cards and QR-code payments, but their supported features, fees, and verification requirements can differ.

You don't need to use both every day. Having WeChat Pay ready simply gives you another option if Alipay encounters a problem.

Can I use Alipay in China with a foreign Visa or Mastercard?

Yes. Eligible Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside mainland China can be linked to Alipay. Acceptance still depends on the issuing bank and transaction conditions.

Do I need a Chinese phone number for Alipay?

No. Alipay supports registration with eligible international phone numbers. Make sure you can receive account verification messages during your trip.

Can I use Alipay everywhere in China?

Alipay is widely accepted, but not every merchant or payment scenario supports foreign-linked cards. Keep an alternative payment method, such as cash or another eligible card.

Can I set up Alipay before arriving in China?

Yes, and it's recommended. Complete registration, card linking, and any required identity verification before departure. You may not be able to test an actual mainland merchant payment until you arrive.

Final Tips

Ask Buddy ↗

Alipay can make everyday travel in China much easier, especially when you're paying for food, shopping, or local services.

For the smoothest experience, install Alipay before departure, link an eligible international card, complete verification, and check applicable fees.

Most importantly, don't rely on a single payment method. Carry some Chinese yuan, keep a backup card, and make sure your phone has reliable internet access and enough battery.

A little preparation will help you spend less time troubleshooting payments and more time enjoying your trip.
