China Arrival Card and Airport Entry: What to Prepare

Prepare China's arrival card, passport and hotel details, then navigate immigration, baggage collection and customs after landing.

IN THIS GUIDE

Before flying to mainland China, confirm your right to enter and save your passport, travel bookings and first accommodation details where you can retrieve them. The arrival card records entry information; it is separate from a visa, visa-free eligibility and any customs declaration.

For a typical arriving passenger, the sequence after leaving the aircraft is follow arrivals or immigration signs → complete the applicable border process → collect checked baggage → clear customs → reach the public arrivals hall. Transfers and special entry arrangements can use different channels, so follow staff directions for your itinerary.

Check your entry basis before completing forms

Use the rule that applies to your passport, purpose and complete route. Having an onward ticket or hotel booking does not by itself establish visa-free eligibility.

If you plan to use 240-hour visa-free transit, confirm the onward destination, ticket, entry port and permitted travel area. Follow the designated transit instructions at the airport. Do not assume that an ordinary tourist arrival channel can resolve every transit question.

The airline may check your documents before boarding. Border inspection on arrival is a separate assessment.

Illustrative arrival preparation: the arrival card records information; it does not replace entry eligibility or immigration checks.

Use the official arrival-card service

Ask Buddy ↗

The NIA provides a free online service at its official arrival-card website. Official NIA channels also include its government service platforms and relevant app or mini-program services.

Prepare the details requested by the current form, including your travel document, arrival journey and accommodation information. Enter information consistently with your documents and actual plan. Save the completion result as instructed by the service; it is not an entry approval.

You do not need to pay an unofficial website to complete the arrival card. If you cannot submit online beforehand, the NIA states that arrival-port completion options and paper cards remain available. Some travellers are exempt, including specified group and transit categories; check the current official instructions for your case.

Keep this information accessible

ItemWhy it helps
Original passport and applicable entry permissionEstablishes the document and entry basis you are using
Flight and onward-travel detailsHelps explain the route, especially for transit arrangements
First hotel's Chinese name, address and phoneGives you a usable accommodation reference without relying on roaming
Arrival-card completion information, if applicableLets you follow the correct next step at the port
Bookings and relevant official notices saved offlineProvides a reference when your connection or account login fails

Keep documents available through the border process rather than packing them inside a suitcase. A passport photo is a useful reference, not a replacement for the original document.

Follow the correct signs after landing

At a large airport you may leave the aircraft at a satellite building and take airport transport before reaching immigration. Follow the route for international arrivals or your connecting journey; do not leave a controlled area just to find a transport mode you saw online.

When asked about your visit, explain your actual purpose, first accommodation and onward plan. If you do not understand a question, ask for clarification instead of guessing. Requirements differ by passport, entry arrangement and circumstances.

After border processing, check the baggage screens for your flight. If a checked bag does not arrive, speak to the airline's baggage service before leaving the baggage-reclaim area, and keep the report and baggage tag.

Schematic arrival order: immigration → baggage reclaim → customs → public arrivals. Follow the airport's current routing and any instructions for your circumstances.

Customs is a separate step

Ask Buddy ↗

Customs deals with the goods you carry. The airport's red and green channels concern declaration requirements; they do not replace immigration processing or grant permission to bring a restricted item.

Read the current customs notice for your belongings. If you have goods requiring declaration or are unsure about an item, ask customs staff before choosing a channel. Foods, plants, medicines, high-value goods and other controlled items may need specific checks. Rules depend on the item and circumstances, not simply on whether it fits in your suitcase.

For medication, carry the identifying information and supporting documents you have checked in advance. Do not rely on a travel blog's blanket statement that a particular quantity is always allowed.

Before leaving the public arrivals hall

Ask Buddy ↗

Find the correct terminal, retrieve your hotel's saved address and confirm how you will pay for the first transfer. Get connected if possible, but retain an option that does not require a newly activated app.

If you need help, show a short request: 请问去出租车候车区怎么走? — “How do I get to the taxi queue?” For other transport, replace 出租车 with 地铁 (metro) or 机场巴士 (airport bus).

The airport-to-hotel guide helps choose a transfer after you have completed entry procedures.
