Shanghai Pudong Airport to the City: Metro, Maglev, Rail and Taxi

Choose a Pudong airport transfer to Shanghai by Metro Line 2, maglev, Airport Link Line or car, including late arrivals and Hongqiao connections.

Ask Buddy
IN THIS GUIDE

From Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG / 上海浦东国际机场), Metro Line 2 is useful for many city journeys; the maglev ends at Longyang Road and normally needs an onward connection; the Airport Link Line is especially relevant for Hongqiao and destinations along its corridor. A licensed taxi or confirmed car booking can simplify the final trip to a hotel.

Choose using the hotel's exact address and the time you will reach landside arrivals. Pudong is not Hongqiao Airport (SHA), and a fast airport-train segment does not establish your total door-to-door time.

Search the complete journey to your accommodation, including walks and transfers. Do not choose the fastest advertised train simply because its name includes “airport”.

Rail and road transfer options between Shanghai Pudong Airport and the city

Illustrative Pudong transfer options: the best route depends on the destination and any onward connection.

After immigration and baggage

Ask Buddy ↗

Follow the airport's route to public arrivals in T1 or T2. A satellite gate is not the same as a landside transport departure point. Complete the applicable entry and customs process before following ground-transport signs.

Keep the hotel's Chinese name, street address, phone number and booking reply accessible. If you have no mobile data, use that saved information to ask the airport information desk about an operating ticket counter or official taxi queue.

Useful question: 请问去这里坐地铁方便,还是坐出租车方便? — “For this address, is the metro or a taxi more practical?”

Metro Line 2

Ask Buddy ↗

Follow signs for 地铁2号线 and the airport station serving T1 and T2. Check the current map and destination direction; the line runs across the city and connects with other metro services.

For hotels near a suitable central station, Line 2 may avoid a road journey. Include the walk from the station exit and the burden of handling bags through gates and interchanges. A hotel near a famous district name may still be far from its useful station entrance.

Buy a supported ticket or use an eligible local transport payment method. Read the actual fare and gate instructions. Keep the same credential for the journey and retain a single-journey ticket until exit.

Maglev to Longyang Road

Ask Buddy ↗

The maglev is a different service from Metro Line 2. Its city-side endpoint is Longyang Road / 龙阳路, not People's Square or the Bund.

Choose it when the full connection from Longyang Road suits your hotel and the service is operating. Account for the change, any separate ticket and the final walk or car journey. A short maglev ride can still be an inconvenient hotel transfer if the onward section is difficult.

Check the current operating information at the airport or operator before committing to a late departure.

Ask Buddy ↗

The Airport Link Line / 机场联络线 links the airport station with Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 / 虹桥2号航站楼 in about 40 minutes of rail travel. That is not the minimum time needed between flights.

It has intermediate stops and connections toward other rail services. Check the particular interchange, walking route and fare arrangement for your destination. It is distinct from the maglev and the ordinary Line 2 metro route.

For a flight from Hongqiao T1, or an onward high-speed train, you still need to reach the correct terminal or railway departure hall. Keep time for baggage, identity and security procedures as applicable.

Pudong Airport rail options distinguished as Metro Line 2, Maglev to Longyang Road and Airport Link toward Hongqiao Terminal 2

Three distinct Pudong rail choices: Metro Line 2, Maglev to Longyang Road and Airport Link toward Hongqiao T2. This is a schematic, not a geographic map; include your onward connection.

Taxi and app-car pickup

Ask Buddy ↗

Follow the marked licensed taxi queue. The city's published airport guidance identifies the T1 taxi area outside Arrival Gate 12 and the T2 area outside Arrival Gate 25; current airport signs and staff directions take precedence if access has changed.

An app car may use a different pickup area. Select your actual terminal and the zone shown in the confirmed order, then match the car and registration. Do not set the pickup pin to a random terminal exit.

Show the full Chinese hotel address and confirm the payment method. Use the current meter, official fare information or agreed booking terms rather than an old online fare estimate.

Late arrivals and disrupted connections

Ask Buddy ↗

Check the last usable service and any onward metro connection for when you can reach the platform, not when the aircraft lands. If rail has ended, ask about currently operating airport buses or the licensed taxi arrangement.

Contact your hotel about the revised arrival time. If you have a separate flight or train to catch, compare the full transfer with its actual check-in or boarding deadline. The 40-minute airport rail time does not include entry procedures, terminal walks or security.
