How to Board a High-Speed Train in China
Find the right railway station, use your original passport, pass security, locate the gate and board a high-speed train in China.
IN THIS GUIDE
Bring the original identity document used for your booking and go to the exact departure station on the issued ticket. Allow time for the station entrance, identity checks, security and the walk to your boarding gate. Ticket gates close before departure; the train's departure time is not your arrival deadline at the station.
For an unfamiliar station, planning roughly 60–90 minutes before departure is a useful starting buffer, not a railway rule. Increase it for holidays, document issues, large groups or assistance needs, and follow any more demanding operator instructions.
Keep the essential details together
Ask Buddy ↗Save your train number, date, departure station, departure time, destination, coach, seat and booking reference. Keep the original passport accessible through arrival at your destination, not buried in a suitcase.
| English | Chinese you may see | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Railway station | 火车站 / 铁路车站 | Mainline railway, not necessarily the metro |
| Entrance | 进站口 | Where passengers enter for departure |
| Waiting hall | 候车厅 | Area before boarding is called |
| Ticket gate | 检票口 | The boarding checkpoint for the train |
| Platform | 站台 | Where the train stops |
| Coach / seat | 车厢 / 座位 | Your assigned carriage and place |
| Exit | 出站口 | The destination arrival exit |
A booking screen or QR code does not remove the need to carry the required original identification.

Go to the right station entrance
Ask Buddy ↗Tell a driver the complete Chinese station name and, where available, the departure entrance. A station may have several approach roads, and the nearest vehicle drop-off is not necessarily the nearest step-free route.
At a shared hub, follow signs for the railway departure hall. The metro gates and the mainline railway entrance serve different journeys. If unsure, show your issued ticket details and ask staff before joining a queue.
Do not assume Beijing South means Beijing railway station, or Shanghai Hongqiao means Shanghai railway station. Check again when ordering the local transfer.

Ask BuddyIdentity check and security
Ask Buddy ↗Foreign passengers can use supported automatic or manual checks with the original valid identification used to buy the ticket. If a reader cannot process your passport, ask for the staffed channel rather than repeatedly attempting a different gate.
Useful phrase: 我用护照买了这张票,请问在哪里核验证件? — “I bought this ticket with my passport. Where should my document be checked?”
Follow staff instructions for bags and restricted items. Railway rules differ from aviation rules; an item allowed on your flight is not automatically allowed on a train. See the packing guide before travel.
If your booking identity is wrong, seek railway or booking-provider assistance promptly. The gate is not a reliable place to fix a document problem moments before departure.
Find the gate by train number
Ask Buddy ↗Use the departure board to match the train number and time, then confirm the boarding-gate information. A large station can have several trains to the same destination. Gate assignments and operating information can change, so recheck the current display.
Keep bags with you and stay close enough to observe boarding updates. Arrange any mobility or family assistance in advance where possible; do not assume it will be available without notice.
When boarding opens, use the identification or boarding method indicated for your document and gate. If you are delayed at a reader, show the train details to staff immediately. Never cross a closed barrier or enter a staff passage to catch the train.

Schematic station order: identity check → security → boarding gate → platform. Use the train number to find the correct service.
On the platform and train
Ask Buddy ↗Find your coach number and board without blocking the door. At a short intermediate stop, get aboard safely and ask staff for help finding the correct coach rather than remaining on the platform to search.
Place luggage securely in the designated space, keeping aisles and doors clear. Keep documents, medicine and valuables accessible. Use the seat assigned on your current ticket; a vacant seat may belong to someone boarding later.
Watch the announcements and displays for your destination. Have your belongings ready before arrival, and retain your identity document for the station's exit process.
The station walkthrough reaches boarding at 6:11 and leaving the station at 8:24.
Connecting to another train
Ask Buddy ↗Check the exact arrival and onward departure stations first. A change between two stations in the same city is a cross-city transfer, not an in-station connection.
At the same station, follow the transfer signs or staff instructions for your tickets. Do not assume that every platform has a direct transfer corridor, that another security check is unnecessary, or that a very short connection is suitable with luggage.
If a delay threatens the connection, ask railway staff or your booking provider about the applicable options. Keep separate-ticket arrangements in mind; do not assume later reservations will be changed automatically.
If you miss boarding
Ask Buddy ↗Speak to staff immediately and retrieve the order in the channel where you booked. Rules and fees depend on the ticket and timing. Do not board another service using the old reservation without an authorised change.
