Lost Passport, Phone or Wallet in China: What to Do First
Respond to a lost passport, phone or wallet in China, protect accounts, contact the right authorities and recheck onward travel.
IN THIS GUIDE
Get to a safe place and identify what is missing. A lost passport needs immigration and consular action; a lost phone or wallet also needs account and payment protection. If several items are gone, work on those tasks in parallel with a trusted companion where possible.
If theft or immediate danger is involved, seek police assistance; 110 is the police emergency number in mainland China. For a misplaced item on a train, in a taxi or at a venue, also use the operator's official lost-property route. Do not let a recovery attempt postpone necessary document or account protection.
Go to the relevant steps: passport, phone or wallet and cards.
If your passport is missing
Ask Buddy ↗Check secure pockets and the last place it was used, then contact the local public-security exit-entry administration promptly. NIA guidance directs foreign visitors to obtain a passport-loss certificate through the local exit-entry authority and contact their country's embassy or consulate.
Ask your hotel or the NIA service on 12367 to help identify the responsible office. A general police report and the document needed for an immigration procedure may not be the same thing; ask which records your case requires.
Prepare copies or details you already have: passport identity page, entry information, accommodation registration or hotel details, bookings and any police or loss record. A copy helps explain the case but does not restore the passport's validity or replace an original travel document.
Contact your own embassy or consulate using its official government website. It determines the replacement passport or emergency-document process, identity evidence and appointment requirements. Do not assume another traveller's nationality or consular timeline applies to you.
A replacement document does not settle every travel formality
Ask Buddy ↗Tell the local exit-entry authority how you originally entered China: with a visa, visa-free entry, transit permission or another status. Ask what needs to happen to your permission to stay and your departure arrangements when a new document is issued.
NIA's current guidance for mutual visa-exemption cases explains that border authorities verify identity, entry or loss records and relevant consular documents when assessing departure on a replacement travel document. This should not be simplified into either “everyone needs a new visa” or “a new passport always lets you leave immediately”.
Keep track of your permitted stay. Waiting for a replacement does not by itself extend it. Contact the authority before a deadline or booked departure becomes a problem.
Do not use a passport reported lost or stolen if you subsequently find it without checking its status with the issuing authority.
If your phone is missing
Ask Buddy ↗Use the device maker's official lost-device service where available. Follow the instructions for securing the device and protecting the associated account. Do not visit an isolated location or confront someone because a map appears to locate the phone.
Contact the mobile provider about the affected SIM or eSIM, and protect payment and account-recovery access through the relevant providers. Consider which accounts depend on SMS to that number before changing recovery arrangements.
If you need to use another device, use a trusted one and the official account-recovery pages. Sign out afterwards. A message claiming your phone has been found may be a phishing attempt; do not disclose verification codes or remove security protection because a stranger requests it.
If your wallet or cards are missing
Ask Buddy ↗Use your issuer's verified channel to freeze or report affected cards as appropriate. Review transactions and retain the references for any unauthorised-payment report. Check whether identity documents or keys were also inside.
Access emergency funds through an existing trusted arrangement, insurer or bank service that you can verify. Do not assume a consulate or a stranger will replace your travel spending money.
Keep records for any insurance claim. The insurer may specify reporting and evidence requirements, so contact it promptly and preserve receipts and reports.

Illustrative loss response: document replacement, device protection and card reporting are separate tasks.
Recover an item through the actual operator
Ask Buddy ↗For a taxi or app car, keep the trip reference, vehicle details, route and time. For a railway or airline journey, keep the train or flight number, coach or seat and the point where the loss was noticed. For a hotel or attraction, contact its official service desk.
Describe the item without publishing sensitive information. Verify the operator and collection method before sending money, identification or another person to collect it.
Useful phrase: 我的护照/手机/钱包丢了,请问失物招领处在哪里? — “My passport / phone / wallet is missing. Where is lost property?”

Separate loss-response tasks: passport authorities and your consulate handle travel documents; device protection secures the phone; the card issuer handles affected cards. One action does not replace the others.
Recheck accommodation and onward bookings
Ask Buddy ↗Notify the hotel and each relevant airline, railway or booking provider when your identity document or contact number changes. Ask what is required to amend the booking and travel; do not assume a photograph or loss report works for every service.
If the trip must change, check cancellation conditions and insurance instructions before making a series of new non-refundable purchases. Keep the records available offline and with a trusted contact.
