China Public Holidays: Plan Around Crowds and Make-Up Workdays
Read China's annual holiday and make-up workday calendar, then protect the bookings and travel connections that matter most.
IN THIS GUIDE
Before locking in a China itinerary, check the official holiday notice for your travel year, including the weekend days designated for work. If your dates overlap a major break, secure the essential transport, accommodation and timed attraction bookings first, then leave flexibility around them. A festival's date alone does not show the complete holiday period.
Read the calendar in three layers
Ask Buddy ↗The State Council's annual notice sets out continuous breaks and any adjusted working days. Look for the year and the title 国务院办公厅关于…年部分节假日安排的通知. Read both the holiday range and the lines marked 上班, meaning work.
Separate these three questions:
- Which day is the festival? Several festivals follow the lunar calendar, so their Gregorian dates vary.
- Which dates form the official break? The continuous break can include adjacent weekends and adjusted days.
- Which nearby weekends are working days? An ordinary Saturday/Sunday calendar can therefore be misleading.
For example, the official 2026 notice listed a 1–7 October National Day break and designated 20 September and 10 October as working days. That is an example of how to read the notice, not a calendar for later years. Check a new year's own notice rather than moving the dates forward.

Compare travel-day options before locking in transport and timed reservations.
Identify the holidays relevant to your route
Ask Buddy ↗The national calendar covers New Year, Spring Festival, Qingming, Labour Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day. Check the complete break, particularly when festivals are close together.
Treat Spring Festival, the Labour Day break and the National Day period as reasons to investigate demand early. The degree of pressure depends on the city, route and day; a national holiday does not mean every place is equally crowded or every business is closed.
Ask hotels, attractions and restaurants about their actual opening arrangements. A public-holiday notice is not an attraction timetable. Museum closure days, special openings and reservation releases still need checking with that venue.
Protect the parts you cannot easily replace
Ask Buddy ↗List your fixed commitments: international flights, a particular event, essential assistance, a specific hotel or an attraction you would be disappointed to miss. Then work out the minimum transport needed to connect them.
For a holiday itinerary:
- Compare at least one alternative departure time or travel day for an essential intercity leg.
- Check the actual station locations before treating another departure station as an easy substitute.
- Read the room's cancellation deadline and occupancy conditions.
- Find the official attraction reservation channel and its sale window.
- Keep an alternative outing that does not rely on the same scarce reservation.
You can plan before train tickets go on sale, but distinguish that plan from an issued booking. An advance request or waitlist is not a confirmed seat. Avoid building several non-refundable purchases on an unissued train request.
Make busy days simpler
Ask Buddy ↗Consider staying longer in one base rather than making repeated short intercity moves. Compare the complete cost of a different hotel location, including the transport and walking it adds, before assuming a cheaper room improves the trip.
Group activities by area and identify one main reservation for a day. Leave enough room to eat, rest and exit the venue without racing for a separate train. An early start can help organise your day, but it does not guarantee a quiet site or exempt you from a timed-entry booking.
For a family or someone needing assistance, check a manageable route to toilets, seating and a staffed exit. Agree on a specific meeting point. If an entrance is heavily congested, ask staff for the permitted arrangement rather than following another group through an unofficial access point.
If the key booking is unavailable
Ask Buddy ↗Compare a different day, a nearby activity, another city order or fewer city changes. Ask whether a reservation is genuinely sold out or simply not yet released. Those are different problems.
Do not buy an unclear “guaranteed entry” offer without checking the provider's terms and the attraction's admission requirements. For transport, compare a confirmed alternative and an extra hotel night rather than assuming an unconfirmed waitlist will clear.
