China Travel Budget: What to Include Before You Book

Build a China trip budget from real room and transport quotes, compare booking terms and allow for payment, baggage and transfer costs.

IN THIS GUIDE

A useful China travel budget starts with quotes for your dates and route. Add international travel, accommodation, intercity transport, daily spending and a reserve for changes. A single advertised daily budget rarely tells you whether it includes a room, flights, attractions or travel between cities.

Keep one currency for comparison, and write down whether each amount covers one person, one room, one night or the whole group.

You do not need precise food spending for every day before booking. You do need to understand the large fixed commitments and how much flexibility remains after paying them.

Use your room quote correctly

Ask Buddy ↗

Compare the final checkout amount for the same dates, room type, number of guests and cancellation conditions. A lower headline price can have different inclusions or a tighter cancellation deadline.

Check the location against your planned activities. A cheaper room that creates repeated long transfers can cost more time and money overall. Compare a manageable neighbourhood rather than choosing only by a hotel's distance from a city-centre marker.

Ask the property about arrival time, deposits and any unclear conditions. Keep the booking and written reply. Our hotel booking guide explains foreign-passport check-in and what to confirm.

Illustrative price units: accommodation may be quoted per room while transport is quoted per traveller. Check the actual occupancy, nights and group size before adding costs.

Compare the full cost of changing cities

Ask Buddy ↗

For a train, include hotel-to-station and station-to-hotel travel. For a flight, include the correct airports, baggage allowance and the time needed for check-in. Do not compare a bare flight fare with a train price that already includes the luggage you need.

Price the itinerary with one fewer city as well. The difference is a useful way to decide whether another hotel move earns its place in the trip.

If a booking site accepts an advance request before tickets are issued, record the payment and cancellation conditions separately. A submitted request does not establish that the desired train seat exists.

Choose a booking channel you can manage

Ask Buddy ↗

An airline's own channel and a travel platform may offer different packages or support arrangements. Compare the total price, fare restrictions, baggage, payment currency and the party responsible for changes.

Before paying, check:

  1. Names and document details match the traveller's passport.
  2. Airports or stations are the intended ones.
  3. Dates and times are local to each departure location.
  4. Change and refund terms apply to this fare, not a general promotion.
  5. You can retrieve the order and contact support during the trip.

An order received by a platform is not necessarily an issued airline or railway ticket. Find the confirmation status and booking reference in your own order.

Allow for payment costs

Ask Buddy ↗

Overseas visitors can use several payment methods in China, including eligible bank cards, mobile wallets and RMB cash. Acceptance and fees vary by transaction and provider.

When comparing quotes, consider platform service charges, your issuer's foreign-transaction costs, exchange rates and any fee shown by the wallet or ATM. Check the amount before confirming. A successful card link does not make every merchant payment fee-free or guaranteed.

Prepare Alipay or WeChat Pay, with a cash and card backup. Avoid keeping all your spending capacity on a single phone or card.

Make the reserve match the consequences of disruption

Ask Buddy ↗

Think through the expenses you would face if your last domestic connection failed: another room, meals, a transfer and a replacement ticket. Use actual refundable options or current quotes to size the reserve rather than assuming a fixed percentage works for everyone.

Travel insurance has its own cover, exclusions and claims process. A budget reserve and insurance serve different purposes; check the policy for your itinerary and medical circumstances.

Keep flexible spending separate from money needed to get home. A hoped-for tax refund is not available spending money until it has actually been received.

A simple worksheet to save

Ask Buddy ↗

Use these headings in your travel notes: item; provider; amount and currency; per-person or group basis; paid or unpaid; cancellation deadline; confirmation reference.

Update the sheet when a ticket is issued or a refund is completed. At that point you can see what remains to pay and which choices can still change.
