Taxis and DiDi in China: Pickup, Payment and Useful Chinese

You can use a licensed taxi queue without setting up a ride-hailing account. For an app car, prepare the app, a reachable phone number and an accepted payment method before you need the ride. At airports and stations, the taxi queue and app-car pickup area may be different places.

For either option, save the destination's full Chinese name and street address. Check the branch or entrance, especially for hotels, hospitals and large railway stations.

Avoid choosing a car solely because someone approaches you in arrivals. Follow official signs or the vehicle assigned in your own confirmed booking.

The developer's current DiDi China listing describes an English interface, international mobile-number login, translated in-app messages and payment options including international bank cards. Availability still depends on the account, number, card, city and service selected.

Install the official China-service app from the provider or your device's official store. Confirm you can receive the login verification message, find the language setting and add a payment method offered to your account. Do not assume another region's DiDi app or a mini-program has identical features.

Keep an alternative payment method. A displayed fare estimate is not proof that a particular foreign card will be accepted for every ride type.

1. Confirm the city and actual building or terminal.
2. Select the pickup zone or entrance offered for that location.
3. Check the walking instructions and move to a safe permitted meeting point.
4. Review the destination, vehicle class and price information before confirming.
5. After assignment, match the registration and vehicle to the order.

GPS inside a terminal or shopping centre can be inaccurate. A pin on the wrong road level, an arrival entrance or a restricted access road may be impossible for the driver to reach.

If the driver cannot find you, send the official pickup-zone name or a nearby sign through the app. Do not stand in a traffic lane to make yourself visible.

A taxi queue and an app-car pickup point are different meeting arrangements. Use the route for your booking method and match the vehicle before boarding.

The DiDi walkthrough reaches the ride-request example at 6:01. Your assigned pickup zone and vehicle, not the filmed location, determine where you should go.

DiDi supports English–Chinese translated messages, but keep them short and specific. Use the numbered entrance or pickup area rather than a description such as “outside the airport”.

If the service asks for a trip-verification code, follow the instructions inside your confirmed order. Do not confuse that with a bank or account-login verification code, which should not be shared.

Check whether the ride uses a meter, an estimate or an agreed fare. For an app trip, review the fare details and possible toll, parking or waiting charges. For a booked transfer, obtain the inclusion and delay terms in writing.

Confirm the payment method before the journey begins. A normal street taxi is not necessarily paid through the same account or foreign-card arrangement as an app-booked service. Carry RMB backup if you may need it; do not assume any driver can make change for a large note.

If the registration or vehicle does not match your app order, do not get in. Recheck the booking and use official support. If you feel in immediate danger, seek local emergency assistance; do not spend time resolving an app dispute first.

For a payment failure, check whether the trip already has a charge or pending transaction before paying again. Resolve it through the provider's official support and your card issuer where needed. Keep the trip reference and receipt.

For lost property, use the trip's official lost-item or support route. Supply the time, route and item description. A stranger's promise to retrieve the item is not a reason to disclose account credentials or transfer a deposit.
