Shopping and Souvenirs in China: Prices, Receipts and Returns

Shop for souvenirs in China, confirm prices and product details, keep receipts, check return terms and prepare goods for the trip home.

IN THIS GUIDE

Choose purchases you can identify, pay for, transport and use at home. Before buying, confirm the final price, exactly what is included, the seller's identity and the return conditions. Keep the receipt and any written product description.

For departure tax refunds, establish eligibility and documentation with a participating store before paying. A shopping receipt alone does not guarantee a refund, and a Chinese refund arrangement does not determine whether your destination country allows the item in.

Choose a souvenir that fits the journey

Type of purchaseWhat to check
Stationery, prints or small design itemsMaterials, dimensions and whether they travel safely
Textiles or clothingFabric, sizing, care information and return terms
Tea or packaged foodIngredients, expiry, packaging and your destination's import rules
Ceramics or other fragile piecesWeight, protective packing and the cost of carrying them
ElectronicsPower requirements, language, regional compatibility and warranty support

These are categories to consider, not endorsements of particular shops or products. For an important gift, check the actual item's specifications instead of relying on a familiar brand name or a photo.

If a food, plant, animal-derived product or apparently antique object may be controlled, check the relevant authorities before purchase. A shop agreeing to sell it is not proof that you can export, carry or import it.

Select a seller you can contact again

Ask Buddy ↗

For a branded product, verify the official or authorised channel and the identity shown on the invoice. For an independent maker, ask who made the item, what it is made from and what after-sales help is available.

A market stall, a shopping mall and an online shop can have different practical return arrangements. Save the shop name, address and contact channel. If you buy through a platform, keep the order in that account and know how to reach its support.

Do not transfer money outside the agreed channel merely to obtain an undocumented discount or an alleged refund.

Confirm the final amount

Ask Buddy ↗

Ask whether the price is per piece, per set, by weight or for a particular size. Check the currency and whether packaging, customisation or delivery costs extra. For a negotiated purchase, agree the complete amount before payment.

Useful questions:

  • 这个价格是一件还是一套? — “Is this price for one item or a set?”
  • 请问一共多少钱? — “What is the total?”
  • 请给我收据和发票。 — “Please give me the receipt and invoice.”
  • 如果有问题,怎么联系你们? — “How do I contact you if there is a problem?”

Check the item you receive: model, size, colour, quantity and condition. Photograph an important serial number or packaging label for your own records, without exposing card or identity information.

Ask about returns before paying

Ask Buddy ↗

China's rules distinguish qualifying distance purchases from ordinary in-store change-of-mind returns. Do not assume every physical shop must accept an unwanted item within seven days. Defective goods and misleading descriptions involve different rights from simply changing your mind.

Ask the store to explain the applicable return period, whether an exchange is offered, required packaging and documents, and who pays delivery costs. Personalised or other excluded products can have additional conditions.

Save the written policy if it influences your decision. If you leave China soon, consider whether you could actually complete a return, and whether a warranty can be used from your country of residence.

If there is a problem

Ask Buddy ↗

Start with the seller or platform using the recorded order and receipt. Describe the issue, desired resolution and relevant product description. Keep photographs and messages, and ask for a written response.

For an unresolved consumer dispute, use the relevant official local consumer-assistance channel or ask your hotel or local service desk to help identify it. Avoid a paid intermediary whose identity or authority you cannot verify.

Do not assume a disputed card transaction will be reversed automatically. Contact the payment provider or issuer through its official route and retain the case reference.

A souvenir purchase checked for seller evidence, return terms and transport or border restrictions

Three purchase checks: seller and receipt, return terms, and travel rules. Evidence of a purchase does not by itself establish a return right or permission to carry it across a border.

Prepare the purchase for departure

Check your baggage allowance before buying heavy or bulky items. Separate what must remain available for customs or tax-refund checks from what can be packed away. Keep batteries and other restricted items in the category required for the journey.

For delivery, confirm the actual destination, tracking, insurance, customs obligations and which party handles a problem. A seller's promise to ship worldwide does not settle import legality or the final landed cost.
