Step-Free Travel in China: Check the Whole Journey
Check a complete step-free journey, arrange railway or airline assistance, and confirm the actual entrance, vehicle and room before booking.
IN THIS GUIDE
Confirm every link between your room and your destination before relying on a step-free journey. A lift symbol at a station, an “accessible room” label or a booked taxi does not establish that the entrance, transfer, boarding gap and final bathroom suit your needs. Describe your requirements to each provider and obtain specific answers.
Start with the assistance you actually need
Ask Buddy ↗Write a short description of your mobility aid and what you can do independently. Include its dimensions and weight where transport is involved, whether you can transfer to a seat, whether any steps are manageable, and what assistance you need.
For a powered aid, have the battery type and manufacturer's transport information available. Ask the operating airline about handling and battery acceptance before buying the flight. Do not apply ordinary power-bank advice to a wheelchair battery.
Use the same description when contacting the hotel, transport provider and attraction. It is more useful than asking only whether a place is “wheelchair friendly.”
Trace the route from door to door
Ask Buddy ↗Check these points in order:
- Room to street: bedroom door, lift, lobby entrance and kerb.
- Street to platform or vehicle: exact station entrance, working lift, ramps and any crossing.
- Boarding and transfer: assistance, gap or steps, seating and space for the aid.
- Exit to destination: the correct exit and a usable route to the actual entrance.
- Facilities during the visit: toilets, seating, turning space and a way to leave early.

Confirm the exact entrance and working lift before relying on a step-free route.
Ask 请问从这个入口到站台全程有无台阶路线吗?电梯今天正常吗? — “Is there a route without steps all the way from this entrance to the platform? Are the lifts working today?” Identify the entrance on your map rather than asking about the station in general.
Arrange railway assistance for each leg
Ask Buddy ↗12306 offers 重点旅客预约, an assistance reservation for eligible passengers needing special care, including people who depend on mobility aids. The published service describes help with station access, checks, boarding and alighting, subject to eligibility and the submitted information.
The current official instructions require online requests at least 6 hours before departure. If there are fewer than 6 hours, they direct passengers to apply at the station no later than 60 minutes before departure. Apply earlier when possible and confirm the meeting point and contact arrangements; submission is not a substitute for service confirmation.
Provide the issued train details, actual boarding and destination stations, identity information and any required supporting material. The instructions require a separate assistance request for each leg of a connecting journey.
Ask about the actual coach, seating and toilet arrangements for your needs. A station wheelchair service does not establish that your own chair fits every space. Reconfirm assistance after a train change and keep the reference available offline.
Confirm airline and road transport arrangements
Ask Buddy ↗For flights, contact the operating airline about airport assistance, boarding, onboard access and return of your mobility aid. Different types of help have different arrangements; describe whether you can walk along the aisle or use aircraft steps. Ask about deadlines, documents and any companion requirement for your circumstances.
China Southern's published guidance, for example, distinguishes ground and onboard wheelchair services and notes limitations on some aircraft. Treat that as the carrier's guidance, not a rule applying to every Chinese airline.
For a taxi or private transfer, confirm door opening, space for the aid and whether a transfer to the vehicle seat is necessary. A larger vehicle does not automatically have a ramp or restraint system for travelling in a wheelchair. Confirm the exact vehicle and assistance before relying on it.
Ask the hotel and attraction for measurements
Ask Buddy ↗Request recent photographs or measurements of the relevant entrance, bathroom doorway, shower access and bed transfer space. Explain what clearance and support you require. Confirm whether a claimed accessible room is actually reserved for you rather than merely present somewhere in the building.
At attractions, ask whether the usable entrance is different from the main entrance and whether the entire intended route is accessible. A step-free visitor centre does not establish access to every historic building, viewpoint or path.
Keep an alternative you can use
Ask Buddy ↗Allow time for assisted travel and avoid a plan that depends on a single lift or tight interchange. Keep the hotel's Chinese address, provider contacts and a shorter outing available offline. If the actual route differs from what was confirmed, pause in a safe place and ask staff to establish a workable alternative.
